Say goodbye to baldness! Korean scientists use LED light stimulator to help hair growth

Studies have shown that by using a red laser to illuminate bald skin, hair follicles can be stimulated to grow new hair. Unfortunately, such laser devices are large, bulky, and energy inefficient. With this in mind, the scientists have developed a wearable LED light stimulator.

Scientists from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), led by Professor Keon Jae Lee, created a flexible array of 900 vertical micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs). The entire array is mounted on a "slightly smaller stamp" chip with a thickness of only 20 microns and can withstand up to 10,000 cycles of bending/unbending.
In addition, the μLED does not heat up to the skin of the human body, and its energy consumption per unit area is only one thousandth of that of a conventional phototherapy laser.

In laboratory tests, the device was tested on the back of a shaved mouse. After 20 consecutive days of treatment for 15 minutes, the fur of the mice was significantly faster than the untreated or minoxidil-injected mice. The mice of the μLED array have a longer area of re-long hair and a relatively long hair.
Now hope that one day, people can use this larger version of the device in their own home without having to use a laser system in the clinic.
