How to replace a GU10 bulb:

1.  Squeeze the clip (or use sucker provided) to release the bulb from the fitting*

2.  Turn bulb counter clockwise to ‘unhook’ from the power supply

3.  Twist new bulb clockwise into position

4.  Replace clip

*Where the bulb doesn’t automatically drop from the fixture, some maneuvering may be required.

NOTE: In order to replace a GU10 bulb, first allow the bulb to cool. Always ensure the light is switched off – if in any doubt, switch off the relevant fuse at the fuse board.

What is a GU10 Bulb?

In broad terms, “GU10” refers to the dual pin cap that is fitted to a light bulb. The original halogen GU10 bulb was designed and manufactured to accompany the GU10 spotlight fitting. The design incorporates an enclosed cavity fixture concealed inside the ceiling. This method of lighting allows for shine-down brightness in activity areas such as kitchen worktops, as well as allowing for a softer backlit effect when used as mood lighting.

The GU10 Connection: The flat surfaced (or slightly convex) bulb connects to the mains via a two pin connector system. A small flattened ‘foot’ protrudes at ninety degrees from the tip of each pin. Twisting these feet into the connector holds the bulb in place. Later GU10 bulbs – including LED GU10 bulbs – continue to utilise this type of connection.

LED GU10 Bulbs & Dimmer Switches

A consideration that must be addressed regarding the domestic use of LED GU10 bulbs is that of dimmer switches. When using newer LED bulbs in existing light fixtures, dimmer switch results will vary greatly. In order to achieve a desirable level of performance, dimmer switches and lighting fixtures designed for the express control of LED GU10 bulbs are recommended.

The reason for the contrast in results is that legacy switches are designed for use with older style bulbs that require a much higher Wattage – often exceeding 100W. This means that the dimmer switch had a much greater range of Wattage to handle, which was therefore built into the design of the switch. However, LED GU10 bulbs typically require in the region of 5W, which renders legacy dimmer switches largely ineffective.

Will GU10 Fit Inside Existing Spotlight Housings?

The first generation of LED GU10 bulbs were wider than most enclosed housings could accommodate. This meant that they could only be used with an open or non-inclosed mains connection. However, all LED GU10 bulbs are now retro-designed so as to provide a true fit within existing spotlight enclosures.

In terms of length, a typical LED GU10 bulb will measure roughly 50mm – 60mm, which is in fitting with standard light fixtures. Slightly longer bulb lengths of around 70mm are available to suit a specific type of housing that has become popular in a professional lighting capacity (e.g. furniture showrooms, car showrooms, etc.)

Long Life: Although the initial unit cost of an LED style GU10 bulb is slightly higher than traditional bulbs, LEDs offer a much lower running cost and a much greater lifespan – the typical lifespan of an LED bulb is in excess of 20 years.
